The golf shaft is an important part of any golf club. Selecting the right shaft can give more distance and straighter golf shots. If you have the wrong shafts in your clubs, no matter how hard you work, your golf game will still suffer. 

How to Select The Right Shaft
 
To select the correct golf shaft ask yourself what is your primary objective…

Do you want to hit the ball straighter, longer or be more consistent? 

The correct shaft will not only satisfy the primary objective but will help achieve improvement in the other areas as well. Here are four general questions to consider and elementary solutions to help you play better golf.

What can I do to hit the ball further?
• Use a lighter weight shaft.
• Reduce the stiffness of the shaft.
• Check your lofts and lies on your clubs.

 What can I do to hit the ball straighter?
• Use a heavier shaft.
• Use a stiffer shaft.
• Check your lofts and lies on your clubs.
• Check the shaft alignment.

What can I do to hit the ball higher?
• Increase the loft of the club. (major effect)
• Use a lower kick-point shaft. (minor effect)

What can I do to hit the ball lower?
• Decrease the loft of the club. (major effect)
• Use a higher kick-point point shaft. (minor effect)
 
But how can you tell what you need? Here are some general guidelines:

Determine the average distance you hit your driver or iron. This chart is a good, but very general, indicator of the amount of club head speed you generate.

• If you have a very smooth swing, you might benefit from a softer flex even if you swing very fast.

 A swing that gets quick or jerky at the top - when transitioning into the downswing - will probably need a stiffer shaft.
